I Gotcha (Feat. Lupe Fiasco) - Big Z

Big Z may not be a prominent boy toy for the underage, teen idol music milieu, but the 16-year-old DJ certainly restores confidence after listening to Justin Beiber’s latest single featuring Ludacris. Seriously Ludacris?

At first, Kid Cudi can come off as another one of those headlining artists who makes terrible music all while maintaining his conceited, arrogant self image. Atleast, that’s what I thought. I was pleasantly surprised, however, with Cudi’s music; instead of the larger-than-life, “Man on the Moon” attitude I expected, I found an artist whose lyrics were more intelligent and down-to-earth than his predecessors (*cough cough* Drake). Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi (thank god for stage names) has a knack for catchy choruses and original beats, and we can only he hope that he doesn’t get dragged down into the dismal chasm of modern day mainstream (still looking at you Drake).

Here are a few of my favorite Cudi tracks:

Soundtrack 2 My Life - Kid Cudi

High’s N Low’s - Kid Cudi (produced by Dot da Genius)

Pursuit of Happiness - Barbara (Kid Cudi cover)

*note: although the last one is a cover, it’s just too irresistible.

Cunninlynguists - Lynguistics

Honestly, I can’t stand it when people criticize the diminutive delusions they know to be hip hop music. Although popular rap has undoubtedly taken a turn for the worse, there are those few artists who stand as the exceptions to such a generalization. In the words of Talib Kweli, ” There’s mad talented cats underground with that raw shit.“

Couldn’t have said it any better myself.
